Hanna Ibson is no ordinary sex-toy salesperson. She\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a champion.<\/p>\n

The 48-year-old, lifelong London resident was recently named Fantasia\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s top sales consultant in Canada for 2005.<\/p>\n

The honour comes on the heels of winning the provincial title three years running.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m willing to do what it takes to be Number One,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Ibson says. And to her that means treating the customer right.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I love what I do, I love what I represent and I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m very proud of what I represent,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d she says. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153And I care. I guess that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s the most important part. I care.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

And what is it that she cares about? In a nutshell, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s bringing people pleasure in the form of Fantasia products.<\/p>\n

If you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re not familiar with Fantasia, think of it as the Tupperware of the 21st Century.<\/p>\n

Officials at the 25-year-old, Montreal-based company describe it as \u00e2\u20ac\u0153the sex shop that comes to your door.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

Consultants go to Fantasia parties of up to a dozen or so people \u00e2\u20ac\u201d mainly women and couples \u00e2\u20ac\u201d and provide a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153show-and-tell\u00e2\u20ac\u009d presentation on the company\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s products: powders, bubble bath, oils and, of course, sex toys.<\/p>\n

Hanna, who has presented at exactly 1,233 of these parties since joining Fantasia in 1998, set a company record last November for sales in a single month.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153This has been an amazing year for me,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d she said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Not only because so many people have booked their party with me, but the sales at my parties have been phenomenal this year. The industry is really taking off and I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m proud to be part of it.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

I asked Hanna what the secret to her success is and suggested that perhaps London is under-serviced when it comes to sex toys and other sex-related paraphernalia.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153London is quite a conservative town, actually,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d she said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153It all depends on the group you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re presenting to.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

Hanna\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s territory stretches three hours by car in any direction away from London \u00e2\u20ac\u201d a huge swath of Southern Ontario dotted with towns and villages.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve been all over the place and they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re all different \u00e2\u20ac\u201d different towns, different people and different groups. I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m pretty good at sizing up a group quickly and figuring out exactly how I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m going to talk to them and what I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m going to talk to them about. It can be tricky,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d she said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve learned to go with the flow.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

Hanna\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s involvement with Fantasia happened quite by accident.<\/p>\n

About 12 years ago, the former proofreader, typesetter and production manager was moonlighting with another company that sold women\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s wear in a similar Tupperware party-like fashion.<\/p>\n

Hanna\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s friend asked her to go along with her to a Fantasia party as a favour.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I was very impressed with the quality of the presentation,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d she said.<\/p>\n

A few months later, after talking with Fantasia representatives and attending a few more parties, she realized that Fantasia offered a better opportunity for her as a sales consultant.<\/p>\n

Now, nearly eight years later, Hanna is not only a top consultant, but she also trains new consultants, one of just three trainers in Ontario.<\/p>\n

Consultants have to go through a rigorous and thorough 40-hour training workshop before they can represent the company at parties. The training is critical, says Hanna, because it helps consultants get comfortable with what could be an uncomfortable sales experience.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I did wonder, when I was starting out, if I could do it. Could I use photographs and diagrams to explain sex products?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d she said.<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153You learn to present it as an acceptable product. And 80 per cent of what I sell is of a non-sexual nature \u00e2\u20ac\u201d powders and bubble baths and oils.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

But in order to succeed, Hanna also sells plenty of vibrators.<\/p>\n

Her top seller?<\/p>\n

\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Any of the bullet toys are big sellers,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d she said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153They\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re unobtrusive, don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t look like a penis and they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re non-male threatening.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n

When asked to share some of her sales technique, Hanna explained: \u00e2\u20ac\u0153You have to learn how to look at people like they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re not walking wallets.<\/p>\n

You have to care. Once you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve mastered that, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s easy.”<\/p>\n
