Sony’s Universal Media Disc facing last rites

In an article via yahoo / reuters there is discussion about all major movie studios halting production of the Sony UMD’s for movies.

Disappointing sales have slowed the flow of movies on the proprietary Universal Media Disc to a mere trickle. At least two major studios have completely stopped releasing movies on UMD, while others are either toying with the idea or drastically cutting back.

The article tries to spell gloom and doom about the Sony PSP as a movie viewing device. The author does mention that Sony will be in talks with the major movie studios about allowing Sony to make the psp attachable to a tv so that movies can be viewed on a television using the psp as a portable movie player.

But next week, Sony Computer Entertainment executives will begin making the rounds of the Hollywood studios to discuss plans for making the PSP able to connect to TV sets.

There is some speculation that the flood of movies available right at launch time of the PSP may have had a rebound effect, causing a sharp dip in sales later. We have yet to aquire numbers for the sale of the sony psp’s first adult video UMD, Bouncy’s virtual lapdance UMD, but we expect sales of adult umds and sony psp porn downloads to continue to flourish.

Watching full length movies on the psp may not be the best use of the portable device; television shows, comedy bits, and small, segmented video have been huge hits with itunes, youtube and others is often desired when there is time to kill, and watching full length, 2 and a half hour movies while waiting for something, just doesn’t make that much sense.

We’d welcome the addition of a cable or wireless connection to the televsion for large screen viewing, this may become a way for people to share video with others as well…
